Hatters Drop Thrilling Affair to Illinois State, 3-2

Stetson's Maggie Struble scored a pair of goals but Illinois State was able to rally for a 3-2 win in an entertaining women's soccer affair, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.

Despite the setback, Stetson head coach Chris Bergmann was pleased with his young team's overall performance in their final tune-up before ASUN Conference play begins next week.

"I love that we're scoring goals and that we're aggressive in our pressure," Bergmann said. "We're right where we want to be going into conference play. Obviously you want the 'W' but from what we're doing right now it's fantastic. I love the direction we're going."

Stetson (2-6-1) started off as the aggressor, with Struble getting the Hatters on the board early.

In the fourth minutes, Illinois State keeper Haley Smith wandered too far out from goal in an attempt to corral a loose ball on the end line. Struble intercepted the play and knocked a shot into an empty net for a 1-0 Stetson lead.

Struble struck again 20 minutes later as the Hatters against took advantage of a misplay by Smith. Lily Ammon picked off a short clear attempt in the box and found Struble, who sank her team-leading sixth goal of the season for a 2-0 lead.

It didn't take long for the Redbirds (5-3) to get back in the game. Sara Lafayette 's goal against the run of play in the 31st minute came from 25 yards away and pulled Illinois State within 2-1.

The Hatters led 2-1 at halftime but could have had more. Smith stoned Lindsey Parent on a breakaway in the 21st minute, and Ellie Hackett hit the post with a hard-charging shot in the 38th minute.

Coming out of the halftime break, the Hatters spent the first 10 minutes on the move, getting three shots (two on-goal) in the first seven minutes. But Illinois State survived the flurry and took advantage.

Natalie Vaughn-Low tied the game in the 54th minute when she took a thru ball from Abby Basler and blasted a shot past Stetson keeper Lara Bates from 15 yards out.

The Redbirds scored the game-winner 79th minute when Alissa Ramsden turned Basler's corner kick into their third goal of the game.

Smith finished the game with five saves for Illinois State while Bates made five stops.

The Hatters open ASUN Conference play when they visit NJIT, 2 p.m., Thursday in Newark, N.J.
