Hatters Downed in ASUN Opener

Despite controlling play and launching twice as many shots as NJIT, the Hatters suffered a 2-0 loss on Thursday in the ASUN Conference opener for both teams in Newark, N.J.

The Highlanders (4-3-2, 1-0-0) scored a pair of goals late in the first half and somehow managed to keep the Hatters (2-7-1, 0-1-0) out of the goal despite Stetson's 16-8 advantage in shots and 8-6 edge in shots-on-goal.

"I thought we had dominating offensive opportunities in both halves," Stetson head coach Chris Bergmann said. "Physically, NJIT got the better of us. Their goalkeeper came up big.  There were several opportunities to score off a rebound but we came up just short.  We are going to have to pick up our fight, as conference play is about grit and a battle-ready mentally.  We have been training hard and I'm looking forward to our match against Jacksonville on Thursday."

After the teams nearly played the entire first half without a goal, NJIT got on the board in the 41st minute as Fiona Wright gave the Highlanders a 1-0 lead with a goal off a free kick from the top of the box.

Three minutes later, Alexis Magruder made it 2-0 just before halftime.

The Hatters managed five shots in the second half but couldn't get past NJIT goalkeeper Molly Saylor, who finished the game by making nine total saves.

Stetson keeper Lara Bates made four saves for the Hatters.

Stetson returns to action, 7 p.m., next Thursday when they host ASUN foe Jacksonville at the Athletic Training Center.
