Struble's Hat Trick Lifts Hatters to Victory

Stetson freshman Maggie Struble recorded the ninth hat trick in program history on Thursday to lead the Hatters to a 4-1 win over Georgia Southern at Walden Soccer Complex in Columbus, Ga.
 
In a game moved to a neutral site because of the impact Hurricane Dorian had on both universities the Hatters (2-3), who have been on the road since last Thursday, were the aggressor for much of the evening, out-shooting Georgia Southern (3-2) by a 17-8 count.
 
"This was a fantastic team effort," Stetson head coach Chris Bergmann said. "It's great to see us finish opportunities. We created great offense and when you create and finish, the game can open up for you. Georgia Southern is tough and physical but we stayed composed and we stayed the course. This is the first time all year we played our game and it was fun to see."
 
Struble opened the scoring, giving the Hatters an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 26th minute. Erin McRae provided the assist.
 
The Eagles knotted the game at 1-1 in the 34th minute and it remained a tie game until another freshman broke the tie early in the second half.
 
Sydney McKee gave Stetson the lead for good with a score in the 52nd minute, as Lily Ammon provided the assist for a 2-1 lead.
 
Struble put the game away for the Hatters with back-to-back goals less than 10 minutes apart. She scored goal number two in the 63rd minute, and capped the scoring with her third and final goal in the 72nd minute.
 
Senior Emily Plotz played 90 minutes and earned the win by making six saves.
 
The Hatters enjoy a much-needed weekend off before they return to action on Thursday, Sept. 12 at Miami.
