Hatters Drop Home Opener

Stetson men's soccer suffered a 2-0 loss to UTRGV in the Hatters' home opener, Friday at the Athletic Training Center in DeLand.
 
The Vaqueros (2-0) stayed perfect on the season by scoring early and late, and getting some stellar defensive play. The Hatters (2-1) suffered their first loss despite a 15-11 advantage in shots.
 
UTRGV controlled play for much of the first half but didn't find the goal until the 36th minute. Arthur Rogers blasted a shot from just outside the 18 and into the back of the net as the Vaqueros took a 1-0 lead.
 
That lead stood until the game's final minutes. With just under five minutes to play, the Hatters were whistled for a foul inside the right edge of the goalie box. William Akio, who was fouled on the play, sank a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead.
 
Stetson had numerous chances throughout the game, but UTRGV goalkeeper Andy Rios was up to the challenge, making six saves. Stetson's William Suaut had three shots from close range and each time Rios made a stop.
 
Lute Lillo-Portero made three saves for the Hatters.
 
Stetson next hosts Penn State, 1 p.m., Sunday. The game can be seen live on ESPN+.
