Hatters Edged in Overtime

DeLAND--Stetson's Rob Perry scored a game-high 27 points but the Hatters fell just short in a 66-62 overtime loss to FGCU in ASUN Conference play, Saturday at Edmunds Center.

After trailing by a point at halftime (27-26), the Hatters (7-11 overall, 1-2 ASUN) led for much of the second half but never got any real breathing room against the Eagles (5-14, 2-2). Stetson managed no more than a three-point lead at any time during the half.

Stetson led, 54-51, with 1:23 to play in regulation after a layup by Mahamadou Diawara. The Hatters then drew an offensive foul on the other end, giving them an opportunity to put the game away. But Diawara missed a short jumper in the paint and after a timeout, FGCU's Caleb Catto drained a game-tying three with 17 seconds left.

Jahlil Rawley missed a floater in the lane with two seconds left on the other end, sending the game to overtime.

The extra period was more of the same. Stetson owned a pair of three-point leads, the final one coming when Wheza Panzo made two free throws to make it a 59-56 affair with 3:06 to go but couldn't increase the advantage.

FGCU slowly chipped away and finally grabbed the lead on a Jalen Warren basket with 1:04 to play, making a 62-60 Eagles lead. FGCU kept the Hatters at bay by making four free throws in the final 25 seconds.

Perry finished the game 10 of 18 from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. He was 2 of 5 from the line and added 4 rebounds and two assists. Christiaan Jones chipped in with 13 points.

Catto led FGCU with 19 points.
