Perry, Stifling Defense Lead Hatters at UNA

FLORENCE, Ala.--Stetson used a smothering defense and 18 points from Rob Perry to pick up a 54-49 ASUN Conference win against North Alabama, Thursday at Flowers Hall.

The Hatters (8-11 overall, 2-2 ASUN) not only turned in a clutch performance on Thursday, they also surpassed last season's win total. Stetson now has five wins away from home, one season after going winless on the road.

Stetson limited the Lions (7-11, 2-3) to 20.7 percent shooting in the first half en route to building a 26-13 halftime lead. In fact, Stetson kept UNA from scoring at all for 12 minutes and 35 seconds.

The Hatters led by as many as 19 points in the second half before UNA rallied to get within six points in the final minutes. But Stetson held on for its third straight road victory.

"We make it exciting sometimes," Stetson head coach Donnie Jones said. "I guess we love playing close games. It seems like our young guys feel more comfortable on the road where it's harder, than they do at home. I thought our zone was really effective tonight. We did a great job matching up and keeping them in front."

The Lions took a 13-12 lead on Jamari Blackmon's 3-pointer with 10:35 to go in the first, and didn't score again until a Christian Agnew layup with 18:00 to play in the game. By then, Stetson had built a 30-15 lead.

Stetson eventually pushed its lead to 19 points when a Mahamdou Diawara layup made it 38-19 with 13:21 to play.

North Alabama gradually got back into the game. The Lions used an 11-2 run to get within 42-34 with7:32 to go, and eventually pulled to within 46-41 before a free throw by Perry and a jumper from Jahlil Rawley made it 49-41 with 1:46 to go.

The Hatters went 5 for 6 from the free throw line over the next 1:11 to seal the win.

Perry finished 5 of 9 from the field, including a 3 for 4 effort from 3-point range. Christiaan Jones chipped in with 12 points and three steals as the only other Hatter to reach double figures.

Agnew led the Lions with 24 points.

Game Notes
  • Stetson's 13-point halftime lead (26-13) was its largest since a 31-14 lead against Monmouth on Nov. 23
  • The 13 points scored in the first half by UNA were the fewest in a half by a Stetson opponent since Trinity Baptist had 9 in the second half of the season opener
  • Stetson's three-game road winning streak is its longest since also winning three straight on January of 2013
  • Rob Perry extended his double-figure scoring streak to five games
  • With 47 3-pointers in 19 games, Rob Perry is one made trey away from qualifying for the NCAA rankings. His post-game 3-point field-goal percentage (.465) would likely rank in the top 10 nationally. The NCAA minimum for rankings is 2.5 made 3-pointers per team game played.
