Hatters Rally but Fall Short at Jacksonville

Kennedi Colclough records a double-double

Jacksonville, Fla. -- The Hatters erased a 10-point second-half deficit but Jacksonville scored the final five points of the game to post a 57-52 victory over Stetson Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gym.

Destiny Marshall led the Dolphins (10-7, 2-2 ASUN) with 16 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 37 seconds left.

"I was proud of our effort and proud of how we crawled back in it, but at that point you have to bear down and execute down the stretch, and we just didn't do that," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "We had some different people step up, and I do like some progress that we made today."

The Hatters (7-10, 1-3 ASUN) trailed 42-32 late in the third quarter and by eight entering the fourth. Stetson's press then started to force some turnovers allowing the Hatters' chip away at the lead.  Kennedi Colclough's lay-up made it 44-41 with 7:13 to go, Tonysha Curry's 3-point play cut it to one at the 4:43 mark, and the Hatters turned another defensive steal into a basket by Colclough to take a 48-47 lead with 4:27 remaining.  The teams then traded baskets over the next 2 minutes until JU took a 52-50 lead on a 3-pointer by Shakayla Nevitt at the 1:49 mark.  Day'Neshia Banks tied the game at 52 with under a minute left, but the Hatters would not score again the rest of the way.

Making her first start of the season, Colclough led the way with 14 points and career-high-tying 13 rebounds.  Curry netted a season-high 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting, and Banks added 10 points.  Megan Vincent blocked two shots to go over 150-block mark for her career.

Stetson shot 39 percent from the floor including a 7-for-9 start to the game that saw the teams tied 18-18 after 1.  Jacksonville shot just 34 percent but landed 11 3-pointers in the game.  The Hatters outrebounded the Dolphins 42-32 and held a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Stetson will travel to Florence, Ala. to face North Alabama at 7 p.m. ET Monday.
