Hatters Open Season With Loss at No. 1 Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla.--Stetson men's tennis opened the 2020 spring season with a 7-0 loss at No.1-ranked Florida on Sunday.
 
With poor weather in the area at match time, the Hatters (0-1) and Gators (4-1) were forced to move indoors. The change in venue didn't seem to bother Florida, though a young Stetson squad did put up a pretty good fight.
 
Playing doubles first, the Gators won the point but it wasn't easy. Florida earned a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles for an early lead. With Florida looking to clinch the doubles point, Stetson's No. 1 duo of Antoine Sanchez & Linus Bergevi battled their counterparts down to the wire before Florida escaped with a 7-6 (4) win.
 
The doubles match at No. 2 was halted with Stetson's Sven Thiergard & Fabian Penzkofer tied at 6-6.
 
With limited court availability for singles, the Hatters and Gators played three matches at a time. The top three seeds went first, with Florida winning all three in straight sets.
 
The bottom three positions followed with similar results, though freshman Alexandre Hillhouse turned in a fine effort at No. 6 before falling, 4-6, 6-7 (3).
 
Stetson returns to action when the Hatters host a doubleheader with Bethune-Cookman and Florida National, Sunday, Jan. 26 at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
