Hatters Drop ASUN Opener

Lipscomb outlasted Stetson, 66-63, in the ASUN Conference opener for both teams, Thursday at Edmunds Center.

A game between two of the ASUN's youngest teams featured seven ties and five lead changes before the Bisons (6-8, 1-0) grabbed the lead for good with 13:39 remaining in the game.

Despite holding the advantage over the game's final third, Lipscomb never led by more than eight points, and Stetson (6-10, 0-1) cut the deficit down to three points or fewer nine different times.

The game was tied at 30 apiece at halftime, despite a dominant performance by Stetson freshman center Mahamadou Diawara, who finished the half with 14 points on 7 of 8 shooting. But Diawara attempted just one shot in the second half as the Bisons clamped down.

Stetson struggled from the perimeter, making just 5 of 16 attempts from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Lipscomb was 11 of 30 from beyond the arc, including 6 of 14 in the second half alone.

The Hatters stayed in the game until the final play.

With the Bisons leading 66-63 with three seconds to go, Lipscomb freshman guard K.J. Johnson missed a pair of potential game-clinching free throws. Stetson's Jahlil Rawley collected the rebound on the second miss and was fouled with 1.7 seconds to play, giving Stetson some life. But Rawley missed the first free throw, and intentionally missed the second. The rebound went well off to the left as Lipscomb sealed the game.

Diawara led Stetson with 14 points, while fellow freshman Rob Perry added 13. Lipscomb placed four players in doubles figures, with freshman Carson Cary scoring a team-high 12 points.

The Hatters continue ASUN play when they visit Kennesaw State, 4:30 p.m., Saturday.
