Hatters Win ASUN Opener 67-61 at Kennesaw State

Stetson delivers clutch performance down the stretch

Kennesaw, Ga. -- Prior to the conference opener, Stetson head coach Lynn Bria gave her team three keys to competing against Kennesaw State: rebounding, rebounding, and rebounding.

The Hatters responded with a 49-26 edge on the glass and played exceptionally well down the stretch to defeat the Owls 67-61 Saturday afternoon at the KSU Convocation Center.

Freshman Kimia Carter led Stetson with a career-high 18 points as the Hatters (7-7) improved to 1-0 in ASUN play.

"Our effort was outstanding - probably our best effort game of the year," Bria said.  "Kennesaw is a very good rebounding team.  We knew we had to keep them off the glass, and our kids decided to come out and rebound.  It shows when we want to, we can.  I am just really proud."

On a night where Day'Neshia Banks was limited to just five points and four rebounds, Stetson got contributions from several different sources.  Carter was 3-for-3 from the arc in scoring 18, Jamiya Turner netted a career-high 14, and Kennedi Colclough scored 11 in her return to the lineup.

"It feels great to go 1-0 in the conference," Colclough said.  "I think everyone chipped in today and I think this is the best we have played.  Everyone stuck together.  It was fun to watch and fun to play."

Stetson led 38-26 at the break before the Owls (6-6, 0-1 ASUN) rallied to tie the game at 50 at the end of the third quarter.  KSU would eventually pull ahead 57-56 with 4:24 to go, but Stetson answered right back with a bucket by Colclough to take the lead for good.  Banks added another basket to make it a 60-57 game, and Stetson hit seven free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Carter led the rebounding effort as well with a career-high nine boards, while Colclough and Megan Vincent collected seven rebounds each.  Tonysha Curry battled for six rebounds, all on the offensive end.

Stetson shot 44 percent from the floor and 38 percent from the arc.  KSU shot just 33 percent from the field.  Alexis Poole led the Owls with 22 points.

The Hatters return home to host Lipscomb at 7 p.m. Monday night.

Notes:
  • Banks had her double figure scoring streak halted at 11 games but still had a huge fourth quarter with five points and three defensive rebounds.
  • Stetson got the free throw line a season-high 35 times but made just 18 attempts.
  • Trailing 12-4, Stetson went on a 25-4 run to take a 29-16 lead in the first half
  • Stetson's bench outscored Kennesaw State's bench 22-0.
  • After being outscored in their previous two fourth quarters (both home losses), the Hatters outscored KSU 17-11 in the fourth quarter on Saturday.
  • It was Stetson's second fourth quarter comeback of the season (Tulsa)
  • The Hatters improved to 6-0 when leading at the half
