Hatters Drop Season Opener

DeLAND--Rob Perry scored a game-high 26 points for Stetson but Emmanuel College was 6 of 8 from the free throw line in the final 1:13 as the Lions held on for a 64-61 win in the season opener for both teams, Monday at Edmunds Center.
 
Redshirt freshman Chase Johnston's three-pointer with 2:19 remaining gave the Hatters a 59-58 lead. Emmanuel came up empty on its next trip but Stetson responded with a turnover on its end, and the Lions' KJ Johnson sank a pair of free throws with 1:13 remaining to help Emmanuel regain the lead at 60-59.
 
Two more free throws by the Lions made it 62-59, but a pair of freebies by Perry with 11 seconds left pulled the Hatters to within 62-61. Two free throws from Brandon Simpson gave the Lions at 64-61 lead, as the Hatters came up empty on the game's final possession.
 
Stetson, down by as many as 12 points in the first half, trailed 37-36 at halftime.
 
Johnston scored 11 points in his collegiate debut, and Mahamadou Diawara registered a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
 
Jones led Emmanuel with 19 points.
 
Super Rob Perry
Sophomore guard Rob Perry started the new season off on the right foot, scoring 26 points on 8 of 17 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. Perry was also 8 of 12 from the free throw line, and added 4 rebounds. The output marked the 9th time in 35 career games he has reached the 20-point plateau.
 
Mo Starts with a Double-Double
Sophomore forward Mahamadou Diawara opened the year strong, recording his sixth career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds – one shy of his career best. Diawara also tallied a career-high 4 blocked shots.
 
Shooting Woes
The Hatters struggled from the field tonight, especially in the second half. After shooting just under 47 percent in the first half, Stetson missed 14 of its first 15 shots to start the second half. For the game, Stetson managed just 38 percent shooting after hitting at 29-percent clip in the second half.
 
Baby Hatters Contribute
Six Hatters made their debuts on Monday, all of them freshmen. Chase Johnson, Stephan Swenson and Josh Smith were in the starting lineup, while Giancarlo Valdez, Keith Lamar and Gabriel Wuor all came off the bench. Combined, they accounted for 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists in 105 combined minutes.
