Hatters Fight Hard But Fall at USF

TAMPA--Three different Hatters scored in double figures but Stetson couldn't survive a late first-half run by USF as the Bulls came out on top, 73-62, Tuesday at Yuengling Center.
 
Rob Perry led Stetson (0-4) with 15 points, adding 3 assists. Chase Johnston scored 13 and Mahamadou Diawara chipped in 10 points, with 3 rebounds and 2 blocked shots despite playing just 20 minutes due to foul trouble.
 
Stetson started strong and led 16-9 after a 3-pointer by Johnston. But USF responded with a 13-0 run and ultimately led 40-26 at halftime.
 
USF (3-2) pushed its second-half lead to as much as 21 points at 54-33 with 13:36 left before Stetson chipped away.
 
The Hatters never got closer than the final margin in the second half.
 
While the Hatters shot just 38.5 percent for the game, they did shoot at a 44.4 percent clip after halftime. Stetson was also an impressive 14 of 18 (77.8 percent) from the free throw line.
 
David Collins led four Bulls in double figures with 18 points. The senior guard also finished with 9 rebounds and 4 assists.
 
Game Notes
  • With 13 points, Chase Johnston has now scored in double figures in all four games this season
  • Johnston was 3 of 9 from beyond the 3-point arc, and has made at least two treys in each game this season
  • Johnston also grabbed 7 rebounds
  • Stetson's 62 points are a season high
  • Stetson's effort at the free throw line was its best percentage effort since going 28 of 33 (.848) against North Alabama on Feb. 13, 2020
  • Mahamadou Diawara's 2 blocked shots give him 6 for the season, in just four games. He had 18 all of last season, in 33 games.
  • Freshman Giancarlo Valdez had 5 assists
  • This was Stetson's third game in five days, all on the road
