Panzo Helps Lead Hatters Past Bisons

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Stetson's Wheza Panzo scored eight points in the final 3:05 to lead Stetson to yet another nail-biting victory as the Hatters edged Lipscomb, 55-53, Saturday at Allen Arena.

Panzo, a freshman forward, finished with 10 points but it was his effort down the stretch that made the difference for the Hatters (12-12 overall, 6-3 ASUN) as they won for the fifth time in six games.

Saturday was also Stetson's eighth win this season by five or fewer points.

"Its been fun to watch us over the last seven or eight games," Stetson head coach Donnie Jones said. "We've really learned to play the next possession, good or bad. We're able to make plays but also show a little grit. It's more than just one or two guys. It's starting to be more guys, and when we can get multiple guys playing the way they did down the stretch today, it gives you a chance to do good things."

After watching several leads evaporate in the second half, the Hatters were clinging to a 43-40 advantage as they tried to put away the Bisons (8-14, 3-6). Panzo stepped up for the Hatters when his corner three-pointer found the net for a 46-40 lead with 3:05 to play.

A Lipscomb turnover led to a layup by Christiaan Jones to give Stetson a 48-40 lead. Lipscomb got to within 48-42, but Panzo responded with a short jumper for a 50-42 advantage with 1:53 left.

Five straight points from the Bisons whittled Stetson's lead to 50-47 before Panzo completed a three-point play with thirty-nine seconds left for a 53-47 edge.

Lipscomb eventually pulled to within 55-53 after three free throws and a desperation 3-pointer, but Rob Perry was fouled with three seconds left and went to the line with a chance to ice the game.

Despite missing the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity, Perry stole the ball from Michael Buckland as the Bisons guard went up for what have been a game-winning three-pointer just across half court. Time expired and the Hatters got the win.

Perry finished with a game-high 18 points on 6 of 11 shooting. Jahlil Rawley had 11, while Panzo and Christiaan Jones each finished with 10 points.

Ahsan Asadullah led Lipscomb with 15 points.
