Big Defensive Effort Lifts Hatters Past Lipscomb, 48-34

Stetson allows just 15 points in the second half

Nashville, Tenn. -- Stetson turned in a stifling defensive performance for a full 40 minutes to defeat Lipscomb 48-34 Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena.

The Hatters (9-12, 3-5 ASUN) held the Lady Bisons (5-17, 2-7) to just 15 points in the second half and 21 percent shooting for the game to post their second win in a row.

"I thought our defense was great the entire game - probably the best defensive game we have had all year," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "We made some adjustments from our first game with them that were really effective, and offensively, I felt like we did a really good job of getting the ball inside and scoring."

The game was a complete turnaround from the previous meeting on Jan. 6 in DeLand, when Lipscomb's Taylor Clark and Jalyn Holcolmb combined for 51 of the team's 65 points. The Hatters held those same two players to just nine total points on Saturday.

"You watch film and you learn," Bria said. "I just felt like we let them get way too comfortable. We had way too much space between us and them, so I felt like today we were much more physical."

Offensively, Stetson broke open what was a 19-19 halftime tie with a 14-0 run in the third quarter. Jon'Nita Henry and Kimia Carter each hit 3-pointers to get the scoring run started.

For the game, Carter led the way with 14 points, while Day'Neshia Banks registered a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double performance.  Stetson committed just three turnovers in the second half and shot 40 percent from the field.

"We had different people step up," Bria said.  "I thought Jon'Nita Henry had a great game, and Day Day carried us the whole game.  I thought Kimia Carter (and Tonysha Curry) had another really great game for us."

Defensively, Stetson held a 44-34 advantage on the glass.  Banks grabbed 10 rebounds while Curry and Tippy Robertson pulled down nine boards apiece.

Lipscomb's 34 points scored was the lowest total for a Stetson opponent since Webber International scored 30 on Dec. 1, 2017.  It is also the fewest points allowed by Stetson to an ASUN opponent in school history.

The Hatters will look to make it three in a row when they visit UNF at 7 p.m. Monday.

Notes:
  • Day'Neshia Banks recorded her league-leading ninth double-double of the season
  • Banks and Carter have scored in double figures in three straight games
  • Stetson held a 30-12 advantage in points in the paint
  • The Hatters topped the 40-rebound mark as a team for the 12th time this season
  • Stetson has won 10 straight games at Allen Arena
  • Jon'Nita Henry celebrated her 23rd birthday Saturday
