Hatters Stop North Alabama Behind Kabimba, Perry

DeLAND--Stetson's Joel Kabimba scored a career-high 16 points and added 8 rebounds, and fellow freshman Rob Perry scored 11 of Stetson's final 15 points as the Hatters downed North Alabama, 75-64, in ASUN Conference action Thursday at Edmunds Center.

The win propels Stetson to a 14-12 overall record and an 8-3 mark in ASUN play, and further tightens the Hatters' grip on third place in the standings with five games to go. The Hatters trail Liberty by one game for second place, and are 1.5 games behind conference-leading North Florida, while leading Lipscomb (6-6) by 2.5 games.

While Perry finished with 20 points on Thursday and Christiaan Jones added 18, Kabimba gave Stetson an inside presence and an early scoring punch against the defensive-minded Lions. The 6-8 forward was 6 of 8 from the field, and fell one rebound shy of a career-best with his 8 boards.

"I was just aggressive and I was trying to make plays," Kabimba said. "It wasn't just me. My teammates gave me a lot of confidence, too. I let the game come to me, I didn't force anything. I was trying to take the right shots and most of them went in."

The Hatters jumped out to a 26-10 lead to start the game but it didn't last. The Lions (10-15, 5-7) stormed back and got to within 31-29 before the Hatters settled for a 37-31 lead at halftime.

After Stetson took an early 39-31 lead to start the second half, North Alabama came back. The Lions used a 17-8 run for a 48-47 lead on a Christian Agnew basket with 11:43 to play.

Stetson regained the lead and pushed the advantage to 53-50 on a pair of Jones free throws with 9:53 to go, before UNA again took the lead. Aleksa Matic converted a layup and James Anderson followed with a 3-pointer to give the Lions a 55-53 lead with 8:45 left.

The teams traded baskets over the next couple of minutes before Perry came to life. With Stetson up 60-59, Perry hit a layup in traffic for a 62-59 lead. His desperation 3-pointer on the next trip clanged off the glass but Kabimba quickly rebounded the ball and found Perry charging down the lane for a layup. He was fouled on the play and his free throw made it 65-59 with 5:12 to go.

One minute later Perry converted a fast break layup for a 67-59 lead with 4:14 left, and the Hatters had seized control of the game. Two Kabimba free throws, two more at the line for Perry and a Jones jumper made it 73-62 with 2:24 to go and the game was in hand.

Perry went just 4 of 14 from the field and failed to sink a 3-pointer for just the fourth time this season, but the guard was 12 of 13 from the free throw line, part of a 28-for-33 team effort at the stripe.

Jones was 6 of 9 from the floor with a pair of triples. Mahamadou Diawara chipped in 10 points.

Agnew led the Lions with 16 points.
