Hatters Win Fourth Straight

Four different players scored in double figures as Stetson picked up its fourth straight win with a 59-42 victory against Kennesaw State in ASUN Conference play, Saturday at Edmunds Center.

Joel Kabimba, Jahlil Rawley and Christiaan Jones each scored 11 points while Mahamadou Diawara added 10 to help the Hatters (15-12 overall, 9-3 ASUN) reach the 15-win plateau for the first time in seven years.

Stetson fell behind early, trailing 10-4 with 14:32 left in the first half. From that point on, however, it was pretty much all Hatters.

The Hatters regrouped from the slow start to shoot 57 percent from the field in the first half on their way to a 32-18 halftime lead.

Things turned sluggish early on in the second half for Stetson as the Owls (1-24, 0-12) made a bit of charge. Kennesaw State got to within 37-29 on a 3-pointer by Tyler Hooker with 14:35 to play before the Hatters got some breathing room after three straight free throws and a Kabimba layup made it 42-29 with 13:20 left.

Stetson never led by fewer than 10 points the rest of the way. The lead swelled to 17 points for the first time when Rawley drained a 3-pointer from the left wing with the shot clock winding down for a 55-38 advantage with 3:51 to go.

The Owls never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way. Hooker led KSU with 16 points.

Stetson won despite a rough night at the free throw line. One game after going 28 of 33 from the stripe in a win against North Alabama, the Hatters were just 11 of 23 from the line on Saturday. Stetson also struggled from the arc, making just 2 of 10 shots from 3-point range. But the Hatters owned a 34-28 rebounding advantage and shot 54 percent for the game.

Stetson next visits NJIT, 7 p.m., Thursday, in Newark, N.J.

Game Notes
  • Rob Perry's double-digit scoring streak ended at 12 games as he scored just 9 points on Saturday
  • Perry did work on the boards, however, leading the Hatters with 7
  • The 42 points scored by Kennesaw State is the fewest by a Division I opponent this year, and the lowest number by an ASUN opponent since Kennesaw State also scored 39 on Feb. 14, 2009 (W, 59-39).
  • Stetson limited Kennesaw State to a season-low 33.3 percent shooting from the field. The Hatters also held Liberty to 33.3 percent shooting on Jan. 25.
  • Stetson owned a 38-16 scoring advantage in the paint
