Hatters Tripped Up at NJIT

NEWARK, N.J.—Three different players scored in double figures but Stetson was unable to overcome a sluggish first half as the Hatters dropped a 78-69 ASUN Conference decision to NJIT, Thursday at the Wellness & Events Center.

Despite seeing their four-game winning streak go by the boards the Hatters (15-13 overall, 9-4 ASUN) it was all bad news for Stetson on Thursday. By virtue of Jacksonville's loss to Lipscomb, the Hatters clinched at least one home game in next month's ASUN Conference Tournament. The quarterfinal game will be March 3.

Christiaan Jones led the Hatters with 19 points, Jahlil Rawley added 18 and Rob Perry chipped in with 15. But too many turnovers and an uncharacteristic inability to secure defensive rebounds were ultimately Stetson's undoing.

NJIT (8-18, 5-8) turned 16 Stetson turnovers into 20 points, and had 13 second-chance points. Combine those numbers with 25 points from ASUN scoring leader Zach Cooks and the Highlanders grabbed a victory.

Stetson, however, didn't go down easy. After tailing 34-24 at halftime and by as many as 16 points in the second half, Stetson used a full court press to get back in the game in the final moments.

NJIT led 62-48 with 3:27 to go, when Stetson unleashed its press. The Hatters chipped away as the Highlanders committed four turnovers and missed five free throws over the next 2:38, allowing Stetson to get within 69-65 on consecutive baskets by Jones, the last coming with 49 seconds to play. But NJIT went 9 of 10 from the line the rest of the way to seal the win.

Jones was 7 of 11 from the field but made only 5 of 9 at the free throw line. Rawley was 6 of 10 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and made all 4 of his free throw attempts. Perry enjoyed a 6 of 11 night from the floor.

The Hatters next visit ASUN leader Liberty, 5 p.m., Saturday, in Lynchburg, Va.

Game Notes
  • Jahlil Rawley's 18 points are a new career high. His previous high was 16 points, which he scored at South Carolina earlier this year
  • Christiaan Jones' 19 points are his most since opening the season with 23 against Trinity Baptist
  • Jones also added 3 steals. He now has 35 on the season, second on the team behind Rawley (41)
  • By clinching at least one home game in next month's ASUN Tournament, the Hatters will have postseason basketball in the Edmunds Center for the first time since serving as the host of the 1996 ASUN Tournament
