Hatters Split on Friday at The Spring Games

Chloe Temples pitches first career shutout

Clermont, Fla. – Chloe Temples tossed a five-hit shutout in game 1 as Stetson blanked Central Michigan 6-0 Friday afternoon at Legends Way.

UCONN defeated Stetson 7-0 in the nightcap as the Hatters (4-3) split on the first day of at The Spring Games.

"I thought we played well," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "We had a nice win over Central Michigan.  We hit the ball well and had good pitching and good defense.

"We then played a very good UCONN team.  We held them to four runs for the first six innings, and if we had been able to score some in there I think it might have been a different story.  Overall, I was pleased to walk away with the split today."

Against Central Michigan (0-2), the Hatters pounded out 10 hits, including four for extra bases.  Molly McLaughlin, Nyah Morgan and Devin Lewis each doubled during a two-run first inning.

Temples then pitched out of a bases-loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the first to preserve the lead.  The Hatters tacked on a run in third, a run in the sixth, and two in the seventh to win their third game in a row.

Riley Russell led the way with two hits, while eight other Hatters collected one hit apiece.  Alyssa Gilman and Nikki Steiniger each recorded their first career base knocks.  Steiniger's pinch-hit single in the top of the seventh gave Stetson a 5-0 lead.

Temples (3-1) made the lead up, striking out a season-high five en route to her first career shutout.  She allowed five hits and two walks but no runs.

McLaughlin went 2-for-3 in game 2 but the Hatters could not break through against the Huskies (5-2).  Jaime Tino pitched six innings, retiring 10 in a row at one point, and Cannan Burnett pitched one scoreless inning in relief.

The Spring Games continues Saturday as the Hatters will face UCONN at 11 a.m. and Central Michigan at 4 p.m.
