Hatters Split On Day Two of the Spring Games

Stetson downs Central Michigan 8-1

Clermont, Fla. – After dropping a 5-4, 9-inning heartbreaker to UCONN earlier in the day, Stetson bounced back with a decisive 8-1 victory over Central Michigan Saturday evening at Legends Way.

With splits on Friday and Saturday, the Hatters (5-4) completed the Clermont segment of The Spring Games with a 2-2 mark.

Molly McLaughlin went 4-for-8 on the day with four RBI, and Riley Russell scored four runs.  Chloe Temples picked up her fourth victory of the season in the circle, and the Hatters came away with their fourth split of the season.

Against UConn, Stetson fell behind 1-0 before Lizzie Shubert blasted her second home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game 1-1.

The Huskies (7-2) got the potential winning run to third base in the sixth and seventh innings, but Lauren Klein shut the door each time to send the game to extras.

With the international tie-break in effect, Stetson scored twice in the top of the eighth on RBI singles by McLaughlin and Nyah Morgan.  UCONN answered with two runs of its own to to extend the game further.

The Hatters converted once again in the top of the ninth on Alyssa Gilman's RBI grounder, but the Huskies scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to walk-off with the victory.

Klein (1-2) went the distance, allowing three earned runs over 8.1 innings. She walked five and struck out five.

Blake Crews and Morgan led the Hatters with two hits apiece.

In the nightcap, Stetson jumped all over CMU starter Kaitlyn Bean for five runs in the first two innings.  In the bottom of the second, Brianna Clary tripled home Gilman, and McLaughlin drove in Clary and Russell to give Stetson a 5-1 lead.

That would be more than enough offense for Temples (4-1), who tossed her fifth complete game of the season.  She fanned five, did not walk a batter, and did not allow an earned run. The Hatters tacked on three runs in the sixth.

McLaughlin went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI.  Shubert drove in a pair with two sacrifice flies to increase her league-leading RBI total to 12.

The Hatters will return to action next weekend at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Notes:
  • Stetson is 5-0 when leading after six and 4-0 when scoring first
  • The Hatters have three come-from-behind wins this season
  • Shubert moved into a tie for 16th place in school history with her 12th career home run
  • Riley Russell became the first Hatter to steal home since Ashly Smith in 2016
