Crews' Homer Carries Hatters Past Villanova 4-3

Stetson Falls 12-2 to Morgan State

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- Despite getting robbed back in the second inning, Blake Crews felt she was having a good day at the plate, and she was hoping for just one more opportunity to come through.

With two on and one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Crews blasted a 3-run home run to left field to lift the Hatters to a dramatic 4-3 win over Villanova Friday afternoon at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

It was just the second career home run for the Hatter senior and the first since her freshman year.

"It was a good timing on her part," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "It was a timely home run and it won the ball game for us. Chloe was able to close them out in the seventh."

The Hatters (6-5) fell 12-2 Morgan State earlier in the afternoon to split on the first day of the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic.

"Morgan State played exceptionally well and we didn't," Griffin said.  "We made a lot of errors, our pitching wasn't good, and we didn't hit the ball.  They just beat us.

"In the second game, we bounced back. We took advantage of some opportunities at the end and came out with the win."

Against Villanova, Stetson trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Devin Lewis hit a one-out double to leftcenter.  Nikki Steiniger followed with a four-pitch walk, and Crews worked the count to 3-1 before delivering the big hit.

"I was just trying to keep things simple and trust myself, and at least push one run across the board," Crews said.  "It felt really good to come through and get a win for our team."

Chloe Temples (5-1) escaped a jam in the top of the seventh to nail down her league-leading fifth win of the season. She walked three and struck out four in the complete game effort. It was Stetson's fourth come-from-behind win of the year.

Molly McLaughlin, Steiniger and Lewis each recorded two hits in the game.  McLaughlin's RBI double in the fourth inning tied the score 1-1.

Against Morgan State, Lizzie Shubert went 3-for-3 with three doubles, tying a school record for most doubles in a game.  Nicole Forbes previously hit three doubles vs. Belmont in 2007.

Crews added two hits and Riley Russell singled and scored a run.

Lauren Klein, Jaime Tino, and Canaan Burnett each pitched for the Hatters.

Stetson will return to the Citrus Classic on Saturday when they face Troy at 1 p.m. and Clemson at 3:30 p.m.
