Hatters Outlast Oregon for Season-Opening Win

Marina Rotella scored six times, Riley Reagan had five assists and Saige-Lyn Gidzinski registered the decisive goal as Stetson outlasted Oregon, 18-15, in Hatters' season opener, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center.

The win not only gets the Hatters off to a great start for the new season, but it is also the first season-opening win in the eight-year history of the program.

"It feels great," Stetson head coach Christy Leach said. "Our team just kept fighting today. It showed our resiliency. This is a big step for our team and our program in general."

This was nearly a wire-to-wire victory for the Hatters. Oregon scored the game's first goal, but Stetson responded less than two minutes later. The game was either tied or featured a Stetson lead the rest of the way.

Stetson ultimately jumped out to leads of 6-2 and 7-3 before the Ducks (1-2) stormed back. Down 7-3, the Ducks scored five goals in less than seven minutes, forging an 8-8 tie. But the Hatters rallied at the end of the first half by scoring three straight goals for an 11-8 lead at the break.

Oregon twice tied the game in the second half, the last time coming on a goal by Shonly Wallace at 10:03 to make it a 14-14 game. But Stetson would not be denied.

Stetson's Hannah Mill and Erin Collier scored consecutive goals for a 16-14 lead, but Oregon quickly cut that to 16-15 with 5:30 to play. That's when Gidzinski and Rotella took over, scoring consecutive goals in the final 2:33 to seal the win. Gidzinksi's goal came with just over a minute to play.

The Hatters won in large part due to their bend-don't-break defense. Junior goalie Kiera McCarthy made 13 saves while the rest of the defense forced 16 turnovers. Sarah Trupp had four groundballs and forced a pair of turnovers.

Hannah Hillcoff led Oregon with four goals.
