Hatters Roll to 68-49 WIn at NJIT

Strong Second Half Lifts Stetson

Newark, N.J. -- Day'Neshia Banks led all scorers with 21 points and Tonysha Curry recorded her first double-double of the season as Stetson defeated NJIT 68-49 Monday evening at the Wellness and Events Center.

The victory moved the Hatters (12-15, 6-8 ASUN) into sole possession of sixth place in the ASUN standings. Stetson could climb as high as fifth with victories in its final two home games.

"I thought NJIT played us great in the first half, and I felt like like we weren't real aggressive," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "In the second half, we went to more of a ball screen and that helped us get to the basket a little bit more and to the free throw line a little bit more."

Stetson led just 26-22 at the break, but a quick 8-0 Hatters' run to start the second half broke the game open.  Banks scored six straight points on her own and Jamiya Turner followed with a basket to give Stetson a 34-22 lead.

The Hatters also closed the third quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 15-point lead into the final period.

Banks was 7-for-17 from the floor and 2-for-4 from the arc to reach 20+ points for the second straight game.  Curry, meanwhile, registered 12 points and a season-high 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive end.

"(Tonysha) is such a strong player and she gets in there and rebounds.  I am just really happy for her," Bria said.  "She's played well the last five or six games. She's found her niche on what she does well, and she is really helping us a lot."

Ellyn Stoll scored 16 points to lead the Highlanders (4-23, 1-12).

Stetson completed a season sweep of NJIT and won its fourth conference road game of the season.  The Hatters will play their final two regular season games at home prior to the start of the ASUN Championship on March 6.

"When you go into the tournament, it's all about momentum," Bria said.  "I think the last three to five games of your conference season, you want to be playing well, but it helps if you are winning because it helps with your confidence."

Stetson will host Jacksonville for Senior Day Saturday at 4 p.m.  That game will follow the men's contest at 1 p.m.

Notes:
  • Banks has scored in double figures in nine straight games and in 24 of 27 games this season. She has reached the 20-point mark seven times.
  • Vincent recorded her 48th block of the season in the second quarter.  She also pulled down 10 rebounds.
  • Stetson held a 44-27 edge on the glass.  It is the 13th time this season the Hatters have topped the 40-rebound mark.
  • Stetson improved to 11-2 when tied or leading at the half and to 9-0 when holding opponents under 56 points.
