Career Nights for Diawara, Jones Not Enough as Hatters Fall to UNF

Stetson's Mahamadou Diawara and Christiaan Jones combined to score 53 points but North Florida placed all five starters in double figures as the Ospreys handed the Hatters an 85-72 loss in ASUN Conference play, Thursday at Edmunds Center.

The loss, Stetson's third straight, drops the Hatters to 15-15 overall and 9-6 in ASUN play with one regular season game remaining. North Florida improves to 20-11 and 13-3.

Diawara, a freshman, was 11 of 18 from the field and 6 of 11 from the free throw line in setting a new career high in points. He also added 12 rebounds and two blocks. Jones, a junior, also set a career-high with 25 points on 12 of 20 shooting, adding 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

The final margin of victory for UNF is not reflective of how nip and tuck this game was. The contest featured five ties and eight lead changes, including a sequence midway through the second half that showed the strength of both teams.

With 14:02 to play and UNF clinging to a 53-51 lead, the Ospreys went on a 9-1 lead and took a 62-52 lead with 11:42 left, forcing a Stetson timeout.

But instead of folding the Hatters came out the timeout with a 12-0 run of their own as Diawara scored eight points to help Stetson to a 64-62 lead with 8:11 to go.

The senior-laden Ospreys, however, had one more run. UNF responded to Stetson's surge with a 15-0 streak to finally take control of the game at 77-64 with 2:28 to play.

Wajid Aminu led UNF with 17 points, while Carter Hendrickson added 16.

Joel Kabimba joined Diawara and Jones in double figures with 10 points.
