Hatters Drop Senior Day Heartbreaker

DeLAND--Jacksonville's Diante Wood converted a go-ahead layup with 1:20 to play and Stetson closed the game by missing its final eight shots from the field as the Dolphins edged the Hatters, 53-52, Saturday at Edmunds Center in the ASUN regular-season finale for both teams.

For the Hatters (15-16 overall, 9-7 ASUN) it's their fourth consecutive loss. What this means for seeding for the ASUN Tournament, which starts next week, won't likely be known until Sunday due to ASUN tiebreaking procedures. Regardless of seed, Stetson will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, March 3.

Stetson trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half on Saturday but twice rallied to take the lead. Down 36-26 16:34 to play, Rob Perry scored 7 straight points for the Hatters to put Stetson on top 41-37 with 11:51 to go.

Jacksonville (14-17, 7-9) charged back to regain the lead and eventually led 45-41 before Stetson again came back.

Two free throws by Jahlil Rawley and a jumper by Perry tied the game at 45-45. Jacksonville took a 47-45 lead when Destin Barnes hit a layup, but Perry drained a 3-pointer with 7:05 to play to make it a 48-47 Stetson lead.

The Hatters pushed the lead to 50-47 with 6:31 left on a layup by Joel Kabimba, but the Stetson wouldn't make another field goal the rest of the way. Jacksonville wasn't much better, missing their next three shots. Deathony McCallum tied the game with a 3-pointer at the 3:03 mark, and David Bell made 1 of 2 free throws for 51-50 Dolphins lead.

Kenny Aninye sank two free throws for Stetson to make it 52-51 with 1:42 left. But Wood came through for the Dolphins, and Stetson missed a potential game-winning shot on the game's final possession.

Perry scored a game-high 18 points for Stetson and was joined in double figures by Christiaan Jones, who finished with 11.

McCallum led JU with 14 points.

The ASUN Tournament is next for the Hatters, as Stetson will host a yet-to-be-determined opponent Tuesday, march 3, at 7 p.m. matchups will be announced by the conference office late Saturday or early Sunday.
