Hatters Split on Day Two of Lead-Off Classic

Devin Lewis hits 10th career home run

DeLand, Fla. – Devin Lewis hit a two-run home run and Chloe Temples picked up her first collegiate win as Stetson defeated Sam Houston State 3-2 Saturday night at Patricia Wilson Field.

The Hatters (2-2) earned a split for the second straight day as Boston College (4-0) recorded a 10-0 victory earlier in the afternoon.

"We just got outhit the first game," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "They (Boston) are a good team.  They hit the ball well and we didn't."

Griffin officially protested game 1 in the top of the first inning after the umpires reversed a call that initially saw a BU runner thrown out at home plate.  After a lengthy conference, the runner was awarded home plate due to obstruction that occurred near the third base bag.

"I said she should be awarded third base, but when she chose to go home, she did so at her own risk," Griffin said.

Lauren Klein started for the Hatters and Jaime Tino pitched 4.2 innings of relief.

In game 2, Stetson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI grounder by Lizzie Shubert and a two-run blast to center by Lewis.  It was her first home run of the season and 10th of her career.

Sam Houston State (2-2) chipped away at the Hatters' lead, scoring a run in the second and a run in the fourth, but Temples held on to earn the victory.  She fanned four and walked none while pitching her second complete game in as many days.

The Bearkats put the tying run aboard with one out in the seventh, but Regan Dunn lined into a game-ending 6-3 double play.

"I thought Chloe looked outstanding again," Griffin said.  "I was glad she picked up her first college victory.  We scored enough to win.  The defense made some outstanding plays, and we got a good break there at the end.  The line drive just happened to be an at'em ball, and we turned the double play to close it out."

Lewis collected three of the Hatters' four hits on the day, including both hits in game 2.  Her home run was the first round-tripper for Stetson since Shubert homered in Jacksonville on March 23 last season.

Earlier in the day, Boston U. defeated George Mason 6-0 and Sam Houston State defeated George Mason 6-1.

The Hatters will host George Mason at noon Sunday in the final game of the Stetson Lead-Off Classic.
