Shubert Shines as Hatters Defeat George Mason 8-3

Junior shortstop hits first grand slam, drives in seven

DeLand, Fla. -- The best word Lizzie Shubert could come up with to describe her day was "unreal," and much like the rest of her performance, she was right on the mark.

Shubert went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and seven RBI, and she also made two highlight reel plays at shortstop to lead Stetson to an 8-3 victory over George Mason Sunday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.

Chloe Temples (2-1) went the distance for her second win of the weekend as the Hatters completed the Stetson Lead-Off Classic with a 3-2 mark.

"Lizzie was awesome today. She was at the top of her game," Stetson head coach Frank Griffin said.  "Chloe was really good as well.  She was tired, and I knew it, but she has a lot of grit."

The Hatters also got three hits apiece from Riley Russell and Brianna Clary, but it was Shubert who stole the show.

In the bottom first, the Hatter junior drove in Russell with a single to center to tie the game 1-1. She then came to bat again in the second inning with the bases loaded and lined a 1-1 pitch into the left field bleachers. It was her first career grand slam.

"It was super exciting," Shubert said.  "I was so happy for the team because we got some runs on the board.  It felt good to capitalize with runners on."

In the bottom of the sixth, Shubert struck again, driving in two more runs with a single to left.  Her seven RBI was a career-high and the most by a Hatter since Maggie Fritts drove in seven in 2018.

Shubert's glove was as hot as her bat. She made a nice play deep in the hole at short in the third inning, then made a spectacular diving catch in short left field in the top of the fourth.

"I was so proud of our team because we showed so much energy throughout the weekend, and we never stopped fighting," Shubert said.

Shubert and Temples were selected to the Lead-Off Classic all-tournament team.  Temples pitched her third straight complete game Sunday, striking out four and walking only one.

Offensively, the Hatters recorded season-highs of eight runs and 10 hits.

"We have seen the ball now for five games," Griffin said.  "I was pleased with the way we swung the bat."

Stetson will return to action Friday in Clermont as the Hatters face Central Michigan at 1:30 p.m. and Connecticut at 4 p.m.

Lead-Off Classic all-tournament team
