Griffin Wins 750th as Hatters Split on Friday

DeLand, Fla. -- Nikki Steiniger's sixth-inning squeeze bunt drove in the winning run as Stetson defeated Northern Kentucky 2-1 Friday afternoon at Patricia Wilson Field.  It was head coach Frank Griffin's 750th victory with the Hatters.

Sacred Heart registered a 7-5 win in the nightcap as Stetson (9-13) split on day 1 of the Hatter Classic.

In the opener, Stetson took a 1-0 lead on Lizzie Shubert's RBI single in the bottom of the first.  The Norse (7-8) tied the game in the sixth on a solo home run from Ava Lawson.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Hatters had runners on the corners with one out when Steiniger pushed a squeeze bunt up the first base line.  Pinch-runner Brianna Clary sprinted home from third with what proved to be the winning run.

Chloe Temples shut the door in the seventh to earn her eighth win of the season.  She allowed just three hits and one run over seven innings, striking out seven.  She also had a stretch of retiring 14 out of 15 batters.

Griffin, now in his 24th season at Stetson, is 25 wins shy of 1000 for his career.

In the nightcap, Devin Lewis went 2-for-4 with a double, a two-run home run, and three RBI, but the Hatters fell in eight innings.  Maighread Scafarelli hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth to help lead the Pioneers (7-6).

Earlier in the day, Sacred Heart defeated Northern Kentucky 3-1.

Stetson will face the same two teams on Saturday at 3 and 5 p.m.
