Versatile Forward, Steady Point Guard Sign with Hatters

Josh Smith (Monrovia, Ind./Monrovia HS) and Stephan D. Swenson (Brussels, Belgium/Westminster [Fla.] Academy) have signed National Letters-of-Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at Stetson, men's basketball head coach Donnie Jones announced today.

Smith, a 6-8, 205-pound forward, and Swenson, a 6-3, 180-pound point guard, are the final pieces of Stetson's 6-man 2020 recruiting class.

Smith, one of the top players in Indiana during his recently completed senior season, gives the Hatters an exciting blend of power, athleticism and skill. Smith entered high school as a 5-11 guard and blossomed over the course of his high school career into an all-round talent on both ends of the floor. Despite his size, Smith has maintained many of the guard skills he had before his significant growth spurt.

"I'm so excited about Josh, as he brings versatility and skills to multiple positions on the floor," Jones said. "Josh can score it in multiple ways and has a very high-level basketball IQ with a nice blend of toughness. He had an excellent senior season, and Josh will give us great depth at the front court that was much needed."

Swenson is a classic pass-first point guard. A product of powerful Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Swenson not only played for former Hatter Ehren Wallhoff, he also was a teammate of current Hatter Chase Johnston for one season. Swenson spent the last two seasons at Westminster, helping guide the Lions to a 4A state title in 2019 and a district championship in 2020.

"We're really excited about Stephan's basketball IQ and 'pass-first' mindset to run a team and make everyone around him better," said Jones. "His mindset and ability to create for others gives us an exciting floor general to go with a lot of scorers on our team."
