Hatters Sign Two JUCO All-American Teammates

Shamari Tyson and Yazz Wazeerud-Din join the program for 2020-21

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson women's basketball program has signed a pair of All-American guards from one of the top junior college programs in the nation.

South Georgia Technical College point guard Shamari Tyson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and shooting guard Yazz Wazeerud-Din (Marietta, Ga.) will join the Hatters for the 2020-21 season, head coach Lynn Bria announced on Thursday.

"Shamari and Yazz wanted to play together, but I think they each picked Stetson based on their own decision, so it worked out very well for us," Bria said.  "They are both excellent students and a great fit for our program.  We are really excited to have them."

Tyson and Wazeerud-Din helped lead SGTC to a record-setting 30-2 overall record and a No. 11 seed at the NJCAA national championship this past season.  The Lady Jets captured their fifth consecutive Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association regular season championship (17-0), fourth straight NJCAA Region XVII Tournament title, and fourth consecutive District Championship in 2019-20.

"Both of them play fast, and we really want to pick up our tempo next year," Bria said.  "They are each going to give us some much needed 3-point shooting, and they can score in different ways. Both have a tremendous upside and are just going to keep getting better."

Tyson earned NJCAA Second Team All-America honors this past season after averaging 14.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2.9 steals per game for the Lady Jets.  She ranked third in the nation in 3-point field goal shooting pct. (.472), making 85 shots from behind the arc.  She also ranked ninth in the country in total assists (170) and fifth in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.0).

The 5-5 guard earned Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year honors and was a four-time GCAA Player of the Week.  She was also a GCAA all-academic team selection.

As a freshman, Tyson played for Southeastern Illinois College, where she was named a third team NJCAA All-American in 2019.  She averaged 21.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game for the Falcons (22-10), hitting 86 3-pointers and shooting 40 percent from behind the arc.  She earned GRAC Player and Freshman of the Year honors as well as Region 24 Player of the Year accolades.

"Shamari is just an athletic, dynamic point guard," Bria said.  "She can score, but she can also get the ball to where it needs to be for her teammates to score.  She sees the game at a very high level.

"The main thing about her is that she has a relentless winning attitude. She is very aggressive, and her skill set is terrific.  She is going to make a big impact for us."

Wazeerud-Din earned honorable mention NJCAA All-America honors this past season after averaging 15.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.2 steals per game. She led the team in scoring, finishing in double figures 25 times.  She shot 50 percent from the floor, 45 percent from the arc, and 75 percent from the free throw line.  She ranked seventh in the nation in 3-point field goal pct. (.449), 11th in assist-turnover ratio (2.5) and 23rd in steals (90).

Wazeerud-Din earned GCAA First Team all-conference, GCAA all-tournament team, and GCAA all-academic team honors.  She was also a two-time GCAA Player of the Week.

The 5-11 guard played two seasons for head coach James Frey at SGTC, helping lead the Lady Jets to back-to-back undefeated seasons in conference play (35-0), as well as two region championships and two district championships.  She earned Honorable Mention All-American status from World Exposure as well.

"Yazz is a big wing who is going to be able to help us in a lot of different ways," Bria said.  "She can shoot it, she can take you off the bounce and get to the basket, and her size makes her really difficult to defend.  I anticipate her coming in and helping us right away."

Tyson and Wazeerud-Din join Xeriya Tartt in the Hatters' 2020-21 signing class.
