Even though the 2020 college baseball season lasted just four weeks, Collegiate Baseball newspaper has put together its list of the best freshmen from the year and released its annual Freshman All-America team.
Â
A pair of Stetson freshmen, hurler
Nick Durgin and first baseman/designated hitter
Brandon Hylton, were named to the annual team.
Â
Durgin, a true freshman from Melbourne, Fla., exploded onto the scene for the Hatters as a member of the weekend rotation. The right-hander was off to a great start, having posted a team-leading 1.63 ERA through four starts. He allowed just five earned runs with 27 strikeouts against just one walk in 27.2 innings of work. His 3-0 record included wins over the Air Force Academy (6.2 innings), UMBC (8.0 innings) and Harvard (7.1 innings). His other start was against Hartford (5.2 innings), a game the Hatters won 3-2 in walk-off fashion.
Â
Hylton, a redshirt freshman from Basking Ridge, NJ, made up for lost time after missing the 2019 season with a knee injury. He opened his collegiate career with a nine-game hit streak and led the team with a .357 average while playing in 13 of 15 games. His efforts included earning an ASUN Player of the Week honor in the second week of the season.
Â
The duo is the 27
th and 28
th in program history to be named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America team. Last year pitchers
Danny Garcia and
Daniel Paret were named to the team.
