Hatter Chatter - episode 11

Athletic Communications Ricky Hazel, Associate AD

Evan Weston’s Road to Broadcast Success

Evan Weston took a leap of faith in 2015. Fresh out of college at Syracuse University, the New Jersey native and aspiring broadcaster only knew he didn't want to spend his life in the cold and snow of the northeast.

He didn't know where the road would lead, but he set off in search of a warmer climate and a chance to work as a sports broadcaster. In this edition of Hatter Chatter … The Podcast, presented by Insight Credit Union, we'll talk about how that road led Weston to Stetson University, where he has served as the voice of Hatters athletics on ESPN+ and Hatter Vision for the last five years.

It was also the road through Stetson that led him in a direction he never expected, to Major League Soccer.

A life-long baseball fan, his ultimate goal had always been Major League Baseball. Two summers calling games in the minor leagues – one while still in college and the other in 2016 after moving to Florida – convinced him there had to be a better way to make a living.

The next spring, while calling a Stetson softball game, he received a surprise message – it was a life-changing message. The call came from Marcos Peres, the Senior Director of Broadcasting for the Orlando City Soccer Club. The team was in a pinch, and needed someone right away to broadcast a game in just three days. Former Stetson soccer standout Eduarda Pavao was working with the club as an intern at the time, knew Weston, and suggested Peres reach out.

He did, and the rest is history.

Hear that story along with many others, and relive some of the great games Weston has called over the last five years at Stetson in this edition of Hatter Chatter … The Podcast, presented by Insight Credit Union.
