Summer of Softball: Kara Saylor

Hatters Look Back at the FGCL Summer League

This past summer, collegiate softball players from all across the country had the opportunity to compete in the Florida Gulf Coast League.  Five Hatters competed in the FGCL, which ran from mid-June through late July with games played at Palma Sola Park and Lakewood Ranch High School in Bradenton, Fla.

Throughout the week, each of the five Hatters that participated in the league will share their thoughts on their experience.  Today we feature rising junior Kara Saylor of Bradenton, Fla.  Saylor played for the SUA Pioneers.

What prompted you to join a team and play in the FGCL this summer?

I joined the FGCL knowing I could get extra reps in and stay in the swing of things during our off time in the summer. This league was the perfect fix to not having a full season this past year, and it allowed me to get more reps to be better prepared for this coming fall.

What expectations did you have going in?

A few expectations I had going into this summer was to improve my quality at-bats and to gain confidence at the plate. I would say I met both of those expectations and had a lot of fun doing so.

What was it like getting to know new teammates?

Getting to know the girls was one of my favorite parts of this summer. My teammates and I immediately clicked and built such awesome friendships throughout the summer. I think the fact that each and every girl was there to have fun and nothing was expected of us allowed us to just learn to love the game again!

What can you say about your overall experience?

My overall experience was seriously so much fun. I had such awesome coaches and met some amazing friends. We not only had fun together on the field but off the field as well.

What was the best part?  What memories do you think stand out the most?

The best part of this summer was the fact that I just really got to enjoy the game of softball. There was no pressure, no stress, just a bunch of girls not worried about stats and having fun playing the game. I think this league was beneficial to each player in this way!

What from the experience do you think you can bring back with you to Stetson this year?

I think something I can bring back to school is the community aspect we all built over the summer. With a new freshmen class coming in this year, we will need to build a new community and family-like relationships within our team, and that is something we had to do very quickly over the summer with our new teams. The quicker we can all click and connect the better we will be in the spring.
