Michaud Ready to Tackle Season Unlike Any Other

Mark Michaud's journey into athletics started early – really early.

Cut from his high school basketball team as a sophomore, Michaud became as assistant coach for the freshman team. An opportunity to coach the team in a game, for just a half, was all it took for him to catch the coaching bug.

From there, he tried his hand at almost anything. He coached a Little League Baseball team even though, at the time, he didn't know anything about coaching. From there helped coach a high school baseball team, not at his school, but at a rival high school.

That led him to Eastern Connecticut State University and legendary coach Bill Holowaty. The rest, as they say, is history. Following graduation from Eastern Connecticut, where he was a part of two Division III World Series teams, he traveled to Wisconsin and then Illinois to scratch his coaching itch. He also worked as a pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Siena College in New York.

It was during those years, and through Holowaty, that he became familiar with an up-and-coming coach at Manhattan College. That coach, Steve Trimper, had taken over the baseball program at Maine when Michaud started looking for something different. Trimper offered him the chance to be a volunteer assistant in Maine, and he jumped at the chance.

By the time Trimper had become the head coach at Stetson, Michaud had migrated all the way to the Pacific Northwest, where he coached high school and junior college baseball in and around Walla Walla.

In late January of 2019, Trimper reached out about Michaud joining the Hatters program as a Director of Operations and the response was immediate.

His first day on the job at Stetson was February 15, opening day. He scrambled through that season and worked to have everything in place for the 2020 campaign before the Covid pandemic and season shutdown. He took time for a visit on this edition of Hatter Chatter … The Podcast, presented by Insight Credit Union in December.

Going into his third season at Stetson, there have been nothing but hurdles to overcome, but Michaud wouldn't have it any other way. Learn more about the Hatters' Director of Baseball Operations in this final of a five-part series with the Stetson coaching staff.
