Hatters Can't Complete Weekend Sweep

Stetson's Rob Perry scored a game-high 20 points but the Hatters were unable to complete the weekend sweep of Liberty as the Flames escaped with a 68-58 win in ASUN Conference play, Saturday at Edmunds Center.

Playing short-handed for the second straight night, the Hatters (4-6 overall, 2-2 ASUN) ran out of gas against the Flames (12-5, 4-2). The contrast between the teams was stark in terms of depth. Stetson dressed and played just 8 scholarship players on Saturday, while 10 different Liberty players saw action overall.

Trailing 32-27 at halftime, the Hatters found themselves in deep trouble midway through the second half as Liberty built a 46-33 lead with 13:17 to play. Consecutive 3-pointers by Christiaan Jones and Rob Perry pulled the Hatters to within 46-39, but Liberty didn't flinch.

The Flames twice pushed the lead to 14 points, the last time coming at 57-43 with 6:52 to go. The Hatters clawed their way back in as Stephen Swenson and Perry sandwiched 3-pointers around a Perry layup to make it 61-54 with 4:07 left, but the Hatters couldn't get any closer.

Perry finished 8 of 18 from the field, with four 3-pointers as the only Hatter to reach double-digits. He added 8 rebounds.

Four Liberty players scored in double-digits, led by Chris Parker's 12 points.

Game Notes

  • Sophomores Mahamadou Diawara and Joel Kabimba, and freshman Gabe Wuor all missed Saturday's game, leaving freshman Josh Smith as Stetson's only true forward. Wings Wheza Panzo and Keith Lamar saw time in the front court on Saturday.
