Hatters Drop Opener at Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Stetson shot just 36 percent in the second half as the Hatters suffered a 67-62 loss to Bellarmine in ASUN Conference play, Friday at Freedom Hall.

After bolting to a 34-27 halftime lead on the strength of 47 percent shooting, the Hatters (5-6 overall, 2-3 ASUN) couldn't find the range in the final 20 minutes. At the same time Bellarmine (6-5, 3-2) was connecting on 56 percent of its shots after halftime.

The Hatters led by as many as 10 points in the second half, taking 42-32 lead on a layup by Mahamadou Diawara with 15:52 to play. But from that point forward, Bellarmine out-scored the Hatters by a 35-20 margin as the Knights picked up their third straight win.

Stetson was never out of the game as Bellarmine's largest lead was 6 points, but the Hatters couldn't close the gap. Twice in the final three minutes the Hatters pulled to within a point, only to see the Knights push the lead back up to a more favorable margin each time.

Christiaan Jones led the Hatters with 17 points, adding 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Rob Perry chipped in 10 points.

For Bellarmine, C.J Fleming led with 16 points on 4 of 7 shooting from 3-point range.
