Hatters Fall at Bellarmine, 76-65

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Stetson freshmen Chase Johnston and Josh Smith combined to score 46 points but the Hatters squandered a 20-point second half lead in suffering a 76-65 loss at ASUN Conference for Bellarmine, Saturday at Freedom Hall.

The loss is Stetson's third straight and drops the Hatters to 4-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play. Bellarmine improves to 7-5 and 4-2.

Stetson led 42-26 at halftime behind 16 points from Smith. The Hatters stretched the lead to 46-26 on a dunk by Mahamadou Diawara with 19:31 left in the game, but from that point forward it was all Bellarmine.

The Knights responded to their 20-point deficit by going on a 31-9 run over the next 12:43, taking the lead for good when Pedro Bradshaw's 3-pointer gave Bellarmine a 57-55 lead with 6:48 to play. Bellarmine never trailed again.

The Knights shot an astonishing 84 percent (21-25) from the field in the second half, including 5 of 5 from 3-point range. Bellarmine finished the game by making 13 of its last 14 shots from the field.

Smith finished with a game-high 24 points, going 8 of 10 from the field with 4 triples. He added 9 rebounds, narrowly missing out on his first career double-double.

Johnston was 7 of 11 from the field and 4 of 7 from 3-point range in 35 minutes.

Ethan Claycomb led four Knights in double figures with 19 points. Bradshaw finished with 17 points and 12 boards.
