Late Free Throws Sink Hatters

FORT MYERS, Fla.--Stetson's Mahamadou Diawara scored a game-high 16 points and Rob Perry added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, but FGCU's Eli Abaev sank the game-winning free throw with 20 seconds remaining as the Eagles escaped with a 64-63 win in ASUN Conference play, Friday at Alico Arena.

With the Hatters (4-9 overall, 2-5 ASUN) trailing, 61-58, with less than two minutes to play, Perry nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:56 left, and Diawara followed with a layup in the paint with 1:12 remaining to give Stetson a 63-61 lead.

FGCU's Caleb Catto sank a pair of free throws 21 seconds later, tying the game at 61 apiece. After a miss from the field by Stetson on the other end, Abaev went to the line for a 1-and-1, making the first but missing the second as the Eagles (7-5, 2-3) took a 64-63 lead.

The final 20 seconds took nearly 10 minutes to play, as Stetson called a timeout and subsequent plays underwent official review. Christiaan Jones had a clean look at what would have been a go-ahead 3-pointer with six seconds left, but his shot was off the mark and the rebound was batted around and ultimately rewarded to Stetson with :1.2 seconds to play.

Another review followed when the inbounds pass was knocked out of bounds, leaving the Hatters with :0.8 seconds to get a shot. Chase Johnston also got a clean look at the buzzer but his shot rimmed out, sending the Hatters to their fourth straight loss.

Both teams struggled from field, with each shooting below 40 percent. FGCU owned a decided advantage at the free throw line, going 18 of 28 from the stripe while the Hatters were just 9 of 11.

Diawara was 6 of 11 from the field and 4 of 5 from the line, adding 5 rebounds. Perry added 3 assists and 2 steals to his double-double. Johnston scored 12 points, and Christiaan Jones added 11.

Jalen Warren led the Eagles with 12 points.

Game Notes
  • The double-double was the second of the season for Perry and third of his career. It marks his second double-figures rebounding effort.
  • Stetson went to the free throw line just twice in the second half, compared to 13 trips for the Eagles
  • The Hatters owned a 43-41 rebounding advantage
  • The 11 points scored by Christiaan Jones moves him 48 points shy of 1,000 for his career
