Perry's 30 Points Lead Hatters Past FGCU, 77-66

FORT MYERS, Fla.--Stetson's Rob Perry erupted for 30 points to lead the Hatters to a 77-66 ASUN Conference win against FGCU, Saturday at Alico Arena.

Perry's effort helped the Hatters (5-9 overall, 3-5 ASUN) snap a four-game losing streak. One of the ASUN's top offensive performers, Perry was averaging just 8.3 points per game over his previous 6 contests, but that all changed Saturday as the Hatters ran away from the Eagles (7-6, 2-4).

The sophomore guard was 11 of 18 from the field, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range. He scored 21 points in the first half as Stetson surged to a 40-26 halftime lead.

Stetson was never seriously threatened in the second half. The Hatters tasted their first 20-point lead of the night when a Wheza Panzo jumper made it 54-34 with 13:11 to play. A corner 3-pointer by Panzo on Stetson's next possession pushed the lead to 23 points (57-34), the first of three times the Hatters held that margin.

After that, FGCU never got any closer than the final score.

Stetson's defense was strong for the second straight night. Although the Eagles sank 10 3-pointers, they shot just 31.3 percent from the arc (10-32), and 39.7 percent from the field overall. Stetson's defense was just as strong on Friday, when the Hatters limited FGCU to 37.9 percent shooting in a 64-63 loss.

Chase Johnston scored 20 points for Stetson on 8 of 15 shooting, making 4 of 8 3-pointers. Freshman Josh Smith grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Cyrus Largie led FGCU with 16 points.

Quoting Head Coach Donnie Jones
On the team's overall performance
"This is the first time we've won the second game and that's huge for our young team. We came back with good energy today and made some good adjustments throughout the game. We started Rob at the point tonight. We wanted to get the ball back in his hands and he took advantage of that."

On the defense
"Our defense put us in position to win both nights. The difference tonight was that our shots went down. We're trying to build on the things we're doing well to give us a chance, and we guarded really well this weekend."

Game Notes
  • Saturday's game was the second 30-point outing of Rob Perry's career. The first came when he scored a career-high 34 points at Western Illinois on Nov. 9, 2019.

  • Johnston also had a season-high 5 steals
  • Josh Smith's 10 rebounds are a season high
