Hatters Edged by Bellarmine 71-64

Comeback Effort Falls Just Short

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson fought hard to pull off its third straight 4th-quarter comeback, but Bellarmine held on for a 71-64 victory Sunday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (4-5, 2-2 ASUN) cut a 13-point second-half deficit down to 3 with 42 seconds remaining, but the Knights (1-10, 1-5) hit 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Jamiya Turner scored 13 of her career-high-tying 16 points in the second half to help rally the Hatters.  Kiya Turner (12 points) and Maria Visone (10 points) also registered career highs, while Yazz Wazeerud-Din added 11.

Battling a short bench and foul trouble, Stetson trailed by 11 at the break and by 13 early in the third quarter.  However, the Hatters shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half to get back into the game. Visone's deep 3 with 6:19 to go made it a 4-point game, and Wazeerud-Din hit three triples in the final four minutes to help get Stetson within 3.

Lauren Deel led Bellarmine with 22 points, and Tasia Jefferies added 17.

The Knights shot just 35 percent from the floor for the game but went 27-of-35 from the free throw line. The Hatters were just 6-of-9 from the line.

The teams split their two-game weekend series. Stetson rallied from a 7-point 4th-quarter deficit to defeat the Knights 71-67 on Saturday.

The Hatters will travel to Nashville, Tenn. next weekend to take on the Lipscomb Bisons.
