Hatters Fall in Game 1 vs. FGCU

DeLand, Fla. -- Florida Gulf Coast connected on 18 of its 50 3-point field goal attempts and held on for a 72-55 victory over Stetson Friday evening at the Edmunds Center.

The upset-minded Hatters (4-6, 2-3 ASUN) trailed by just seven at the half and by six after 3, but the Eagles (12-2, 5-0) used a 22-11 4th-quarter run to put the game out of reach.

Jamiya Turner led the Hatters with 16 points, marking the second straight game the sophomore has equaled her career-high.  She was 6-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-2 from behind the arc. Yazz Wazeerud-Din joined Turner in double figures with 15 points.  She went 6-for-10 from the floor with four steals while playing a full 40 minutes.

Krierstan Bell led the Eagles with 28 points.  

Stetson outshot FGCU 42 percent to 36 percent and held a 28-12 advantage in points in the paint. The Eagles outrebounded the Hatters 38-33.

The same two teams will meet again at 3 p.m. Saturday.

  • Yazz Wazeerud-Din extended her double-figure scoring streak to six games in a row. She also extended her free throw streak to 17 straight.
  • McKenna Eddings made her Hatter debut late in the 4th quarter
  • Maria Visone and Tonysha Curry each recorded one blocked shot
  • The last Hatter to play a 40-minute complete ga,e was Day'Neshia Banks vs. UNF two seasons ago
