Wazeerud-Din's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Hatters to Wild Overtime Win

Game-winning shot caps comeback effort

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Yazz Wazeerud-Din split two UNF defenders and flipped an underhand shot up off the glass and in at the buzzer to lift Stetson to a dramatic 78-76 overtime victory over North Florida Sunday afternoon at UNF Arena.

After tumbling to the ground with a huge smile on her face, Wazeerud-Din was mobbed by her teammates as the Hatters (3-4, 1-1 ASUN) celebrated their first conference win of the year.

"After I got open, I saw there were three seconds on the clock, and I knew I had to do it," Wazeerud-Din said.  "I just remember attacking and watching the ball go in. It felt really good. We have been through so much.  We really needed that."

UNF led after the first, second and third quarters and for much of the fourth quarter before Wazeerud-Din sent the game to overtime. She hit three free throws with 9.4 seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 72.

UNF scored the first four points in overtime, but Stetson fought back once again.  Kiya Turner's lay-up with 2:53 left pulled Stetson to within two, and Day'Neshia Banks tied the game at 76 with 39 seconds to go.

After the Ospreys missed a chance to take the lead, Banks pulled down a key rebound and the Hatters called timeout.

Then with the clock winding down, Kiya Turner fed Wazeerud-Din in the high post before the Hatter junior drove to the basket for the winning shot.  It was her first-ever game-winning buzzer-beater.

"We really needed that win," Wazeerud-Din said.  "It is a huge step forward for our team.  It gives us a lot more confidence."

Banks led the Hatters with 20 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter.  Wazeerud-Din also scored 13 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Hatters erased an eight-point deficit with 2:26 to go.

Kiya Turner posted an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double, and Maddie Novak chipped in 10.

Shania Edgecombe had four blocks on the defensive end and added a key 3-pointer to help spark the offense.

Overall, Stetson held a 42-40 edge on the glass and was 17-for-19 from the free throw line.

After falling 90-73 to UNF (3-6, 1-1) on Saturday, the Hatters bounced back to earn a split in the two-game series.  It was Stetson's first overtime game in 70 contests, dating back to another battle with UNF on March 2, 2018.

The Hatters will return home next weekend to host North Alabama on Saturday and Sunday.
