Hatters top Dolphins for third straight win

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University men's soccer team enacted revenge on Jacksonville University Saturday night as the Hatters downed the Dolphins 1-0 at home to extend their win streak to three in a row.

The Hatters (4-4-2, 2-1-0) set the pace in the opening minutes as Stetson had two early shot opportunities but could not find the back of the JU net. Despite a late shot on goal from Steven Johnson-Fikula, the Hatters and Dolphins played scoreless half going to intermission. The Hatters defense held the Dolphins to only two shots in the opening half.

The second stanza began slow for both sides but Stetson found the first opportunity. In the 64', Johnson-Fikula sent a free kick down field for the Hatters, finding Nelson Pereira for a one-on-one with the Dolphins keeper, but Pereira's shot ricocheted off the right woodwork. In the 72' minute, Johnson-Fikula sent another Hatters free kick down field and after it was deflected off a Dolphins defender, Lewis Scattergood found the back of the JU net for what would be the game-winning goal.

"I think playing conference games where you have a lead, for us, was really good. We've only played with a lead for 30 minutes this whole season before this match", said head coach Emmett Rutkowski. "It's been really good experience; it's been a good week. For us to keep moving forward it has to be good days, good weeks, good months. We have two shutouts in the last two games and that's one thing that I'm really happy about."

The Hatters outshot the Dolphins 9-5 on the night as Pereira totaled three shots to pace the Stetson offense. Jacob Gruber was 1-for-1 in save opportunities and recorded his third shutout of the year with the win.

Stetson's men's soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 5 as the Hatters travel to Macon, Georgia to take on the Mercer University Bears in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
