Pereira leads Hatters to fourth-straight win

Conway, Ark. -- Nelson Pereira led the Stetson University men's soccer team to its fourth straight victory as the Hatters topped University of Central Arkansas 2-1 on the road Saturday behind a pair of goals from Pereira.

The Hatters (5-4-2, 3-1-0) set the pace early against the Bears (8-3-0, 3-1-0) as the Stetson offense had three shots in the opening 17 minutes of action with Pereira netting the third one on an assist from Gio Rodriguez to put Stetson ahead 1-0. Right before the final whistle of the half, UCA knotted the match at 1-1 on a goal from Kris Naicker on an assist by Pablo Azcona to send the match to intermission.

In the second half, Pereira's barrage of shots continued as the freshman found an opportunity in the 55' but it was saved by the UCA keeper. Seven minutes later in the 62', Pereira took his second shot of the half and this time netted it on an assist from Maxime Allione. Allione played a ball into the UCA box, allowing Pereira to find the bottom right of the Bears net to give the Hatters the 2-1 advantage, and ultimately handing UCA its first ASUN Conference loss of the year.

Pereira and Oliver Bryneus led the Stetson offense as both Hatters had three shots, with all of Pereira's on frame. Stetson keeper Jacob Gruber made three saves to lead the dominant Hatters defense.

Stetson's current four-match win streak is the program's longest win streak since 2014 when the Hatters won four in a row from Oct. 7-Oct. 24. Saturday's win is also the Hatters second win this season over a team in the NCAA Division I men's soccer national rankings as prior to the match, UCA had received votes in the latest poll.

"I'm really proud of this group as we couldn't play Mercer on Tuesday. This was a complete team win," said head coach Emmett Rutkowski. "We played very well from the beginning and the back line did great and we did great at neutralizing [Central Arkansas]. It's been really good these last few games because our training is pushing the team to want to get on these travel rosters."

Stetson's men's soccer team will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 12 as the Hatters take on Florida Atlantic in a non-conference match. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Prior to the match, Stetson will honor its four seniors for Senior Day beginning at 5:40 p.m
