Hatters top Knights 4-2, clinch playoff berth

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson men's soccer team topped Bellarmine University 4-2 in an offensive heavy ASUN Conference match at home Saturday night.

Both the Hatters and the Knights got out to a slow start as each team only recorded two shots in the first 14 minutes of action. Both offenses went silent until the 34' when Stetson's Lewis Scattergood put the Hatters up 1-0 on an assist from freshman Gabriel Toro. In the 44', after a Gio Rodriguez shot went off the right woodwork, Ajmeer Spengler found the deflected shot and found the back of the Knights net to put the Hatters up 2-0 before the half.

The Knights wasted no time in the second half to try and get on the board as BU found three shot opportunities within the first five minutes of the second half, but it was the Hatters that added to their lead. Gio Rodriguez connected with Spengler off a corner kick and the sophomore headed it in for his second score of the match and Stetson's third of the night. Two minutes after Spengler's second goal, the Knights got on the board with a goal from Juan Ballas to cut the Hatters lead to 3-1.

In the 60', the Knights cut the Hatters lead to just one as Ballas scored his second of the match to make it 3-2. Three minutes later, Nelson Pereira provided Stetson with an insurance goal as the freshman scored on an assist from Spengler to cement Stetson's 4-2 victory.

The Hatters outshot the Knights by just one, 13-12, as Spengler led the Hatters offense with three shots, two on goal while Rodriguez and Daniel Wintermeier each recorded two. Hatters keeper Jacob Gruber was 5-for-7 in save opportunities on the night.

"We played 80 minutes of our best soccer all year," said Hatters head coach Emmett Rutkowski. "Bellarmine had quality shots and we were resilient and did a great job of playing the game out. I'm very proud with how Dan [Wintermeier] and Ajmeer [Spengler] played."

With Saturday night's win, Stetson clinched a spot in the 2021 ASUN Conference Championship tournament.

The Stetson men's soccer team will be back on the pitch on Saturday, October 30 as the Hatters travel to Fort Myers to face FGCU in their final regular season match of the year. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
