Hatters Fall to Miami in Low-Scoring Affair

Coral Gables, Fla. -- Yazz Wazeerud-Din scored 18 points in her season debut, but overall Stetson struggled on the offensive end in a 54-39 setback to Miami Sunday afternoon at Watsco Center.

The Hatters (1-1) put up a strong defensive effort, holding Miami to just 22 first half points and 36 percent shooting overall.  Stetson, however, shot just 27 percent from the floor and dropped its first Division I test of the season.

"Miami is a really good team," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "They are balanced. They are big. I thought in the first half we played with them.  I was disappointed our start to the second half.  I felt like we just didn't have any energy."

Stetson led 11-6 after the first quarter and maintained the lead for much of the second. Wazeerud-Din hit a pair of 3-pointers and Alyssa Hargrove hit from deep as well as Stetson trailed by just one point, 22-21, at the break.

Miami (3-0) opened the 3rd quarter on a 9-0 run to extend its lead to 31-21.  Stetson answered behind a transition 3 and a fastbreak lay-up by Mali Morgan-Elliott to close the gap to 32-30 midway through the period.  The Hatters would pull no closer, however, as Miami pushed the lead back to 11 by the end of the quarter and closed out the 15-point win.

"Overall I thought we battled," Bria said. "I thought we battled their bigs as best we could.  It just comes down to our inability to score the basketball.  We have to get some points on the board."

The Hatters went 7-for-20 from 3-point range and 7-for-32 inside the arc.  Miami held a slim 40-36 edge on the glass.

Stetson will head to ESPN Wide World of Sports next weekend for the ASUN/MAAC Challenge.  The Hatters will face Fairfield on Friday and Manhattan on Saturday.
