Fairfield Holds Off Hatters, 59-50

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- Stetson erased a 9-point first-half deficit and a 12-point second-half deficit, but Fairfield pulled away down the stretch for a 59-50 victory Friday afternoon at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The Stags (2-1) got 22 points from Lou Lopez-Senechal to take the opening game of the ASUN-MAAC Challenge.

Yazz Wazeerud-Din led the Hatters (1-2) with 15 points while Tatiana Streun registered a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double, her second of the season.

"I didn't think we started the game very well," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "We got down nine points pretty quick.  We went on our runs, we had our chances. I thought we turned them over, but I don't think we converted anything from the turnovers."

Cold shooting plagued the Hatters for the second straight game.  Stetson shot 31 percent overall and just 15 percent (4-of-27) from behind the arc.

Fairfield, meanwhile, shot 36 percent from the floor and went 16-for-24 from the free throw line.

"Fairfield is a very good team. They are a seasoned team." Bria said. "I thought our fouls were a big difference in the game. They got 16 points off of free throws, and I thought that really hurt us."

Stetson trailed 9-0 and 13-4 out of the gate, but a 9-0 run pulled the Hatters even at 13 early in the second quarter.

The Stags rebuilt a 30-20 lead by the break and led by 12 early in the third quarter, but Stetson fought back once again. After a bucket by Kiya Turner, Wazeerud-Din scored nine straight points to pull the Hatters within 1.  Streun's lay-up at the 4:52 mark gave Stetson a 33-32 lead, the first of eight lead changes in the third quarter alone.

"I thought our defense was really good at that point," Bria said. "But you have to sustain the game for 40 minutes."

Trailing 43-39 after 3, the Hatters cut the deficit to 44-43 with 8:13 to go, but Stetson would pull no closer.  The Stags hit a pair of 3s and sunk 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.

Fairfield owned a 40-29 edge on the glass.

The ASUN-MAAC Challenge continues Saturday as the Hatters face Manhattan at 2:30 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
