Wazeerud-Din's Late Free Throws Lift Hatters Past Manhattan 57-55

Hatter senior helps Stetson notch first road win of the year

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. -- Yazz Wazeerud-Din scored a season-high 22 points, hitting the game-winning free throws with 19.1 seconds left as Stetson defeated Manhattan 57-55 Saturday afternoon at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The Hatters (2-2) bounced back from Friday's loss to Fairfield to win the final game of the ASUN-MAAC Challenge.

"I am just proud of our response," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "I felt like we played extremely hard, and then I thought we executed down the stretch to win the game.  Manhattan is a very good team. It's a good win for us and our program."

Trailing 48-47 with 6:14 to play, the Hatters went on a 7-2 run to take a 54-50 lead.  Tatiana Streun's three-point play with 4:23 remaining put Stetson in the driver's seat.

The Jaspers (2-2) fought back, however, and two free throws by Courtney Warley with 44 seconds left put Manhattan back ahead 55-54.

On Stetson's ensuing possession, Wazeerud-Din drove the paint and got fouled on the way to the basket.  The career 84 percent free throw shooter stepped to the line and calmly sunk the tying and go-ahead free throws to give Stetson a 56-55 lead.

"When they fouled her, I knew we were in a good shape," Bria said. "She had a great tournament overall. She did a lot for us."

Manhattan still has had one last opportunity, but a corner 3 was too strong and Alyssa Hargrove pulled down the defensive board. She hit 1-of-2 from the line with 0.2 seconds left to seal the victory.

"Alyssa got a two key rebounds that I thought were crucial," Bria said. "She did a good job playing off her instincts and did a really good job for us in the fourth quarter."

Wazeerud-Din went 9-for-18 from the floor and 2-for-6 from the arc en route to her third straight game in double figures.  Streun scored nine points and Ayanna Dublin added eight.

Defensively, the Hatters held their fourth straight opponent below 60 points. Stetson also did a great job on the glass, outrebounding Manhattan 35-26.

"I thought we really played hard," Streun said.  "We had to bounce back from yesterday.  We knew we had to rebound and play with energy."

Warley led the Jaspers with 20 points.

Stetson will head to Katy, Texas next weekend for the Van Chancellor Classic. The Hatters will face Louisiana Monroe, St. Joseph's and Old Dominion in the three-day event.
