Hot Shooting Sparks Hatters to a 70-37 Victory over ULM

Ayanna Dublin leads the way with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists

Katy, Texas -- Ayanna Dublin led five Hatters in double figures with 15 points as Stetson opened the Van Chancellor Classic with a resounding 70-37 victory over Louisiana Monroe Friday afternoon at the Merrell Center.

The Hatters (3-2) shot 48 percent from the floor and 44 percent from the arc to post their second win in a row.

Stetson shook off its recent offensive struggles and led wire-to-wire Friday. The Hatters opened the game on a 6-0 run, then closed the second quarter on a 15-0 surge to take a 38-15 lead into the half.

"I thought we started the game really well," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "I thought we played a great first half overall. We tried some different combinations. I thought everybody contribued. It was a good game for us."

ULM (2-4) cut the deficit to 19 early in the third quarter and trailed by 21 after 3, but Stetson opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Dublin added five rebounds and five assists to her 15-point effort.  Tatiana Streun recorded her second straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Jamiya Turner scored 11, and Kiya Turner and Yazz Wazeerud-Din each chipped in 10.

Stetson also hit a season-high eight three pointers. Kiya Turner went 3-for-3 from behind the arc, while Mali Morgan-Elliott and Wazeerud-Din each connected on a pair.

"I felt like we really moved the ball and found the open man," Bria said.  "We shared the ball really well, and I think that's hard to guard.  I think we have to continue to do that."

The Hatters also busted the ball inside, especially in the first half.  Stetson finished with 26 points in the paint and went to the free throw line a season-high 25 times.

Defensively, the Hatters held their fifth straight opponent below 60 points, the first time they have accomplished that feat since 2016-17.  ULM shot just 25 percent from the floor and was held to single-digit scoring in the first, second and fourth quarters.  The only blip in the game for the Hatters was a slow start to third quarter.

"I think we just have to do a better job of coming out focused for the second half." Bria said.

Stetson pulled down a season-high 47 rebounds.

Ten different Hatters saw action Friday, including Tippy Robertson, who made her season debut.

The Van Chancellor Classic continues Saturday as the Hatters face Saint Joseph's at 12 p.m. ET.
