Hatters Hold Off Saint Joseph's for Third Straight Win

Yazz Wazeerud-Din leads with 18 points

Katy, Texas -- It's still early in the season, but the Hatters are finding ways to win ball games.

After posting a 33-point win over ULM on Friday, Stetson held off a second-half charge from Saint Joseph's Saturday to earn a 51-48 victory on day two of the Van Chancellor Classic at the Merrell Center.

Yazz Wazeerud-Din led the way with 18 points, hitting a clutch 3-pointer with under a minute to play, as the Hatters won their third game in a row and improved to 4-2 on the season. Two of the last three wins have been decided by a single possession.

"We are figuring it out," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said.  "We're playing some different combinations.  It's another close game that we've won, with a team that is pretty much brand new.  I'm proud of our execution down the stretch."

Stetson led 28-16 at the half, thanks in part to a 12-0 run over to end the second quarter, and Tatiana Streun's breakaway lay-up to start the third quarter gave the Hatters their biggest lead at 14.

The Hawks (1-5) began chipping away at the lead, pulling to within 33-31 with 48 seconds to go in the period. Wazeerud-Din's corner 3 gave Stetson a five-point cushion heading into the fourth quarter.

SJU fought back again, cutting the deficit to 38-36 on a Mackenzie Smith 3-pointer with 6:55 left. Wazeerud-Din answered with a long jumper followed by a steal and a fastbreak lay-up to push the lead back to six.

The Hawks later closed the gap to two a third time following a deep 3 from Olivia Mullins to beat the shot clock with two minutes remaining.  SJU had one opportunity at the lead, but Kiya Turner pulled down a defensive rebound and Wazeerud-Din drilled a straight up 3 with 54.0 seconds left to extend the lead to 47-42.

Turner and Ayanna Dublin each went 2-for-2 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the victory.

At 4-2, the Hatters are off to their best start since 2016-17.

"I thought the third quarter hurt us, but in the fourth quarter we made stops when we needed to," Bria said.

Wazeerud-Din went 7-for-13 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the arc. She scored 10 points in the final 10:08 of the game, including a pair of 3-pointers.

"She's got the green light to do that," Bria said. "We are very confident in her. Those are good shots for her."

Dublin finished with 10 points and five boards, including the 500th rebound of her career. Overall, Stetson went 13-of-14 (.929) from the free throw line.

Defensively, the Hatters held their sixth straight opponent below 60 points. It is the team's longest such stretch since the 2012-13 season.

The Hatters are 2-0 in the Van Chancellor Classic and will face another 2-0 team, Old Dominion, at 12 p.m. ET Sunday.
