Hatters Fall to Old Dominion in Van Chancellor Classic Finale

Stetson Completes Weekend Tournament With 2-1 Mark

Katy, Texas -- Stetson battled back from an 11-point deficit but Old Dominion pulled away down the stretch to post a 61-51 victory over the Hatters Sunday afternoon at the Merrell Center.

Tatiana Streun led the way with 15 points and Yazz Wazeerud-Din added 12 as Stetson (4-3) completed the Van Chancellor Classic with a 2-1 mark.

"This tournament has been really good for us," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "We learned a lot the last three games. Overall, I am pleased where we are at, but we have to get better."

Both Stetson and ODU entered Sunday's matchup with a 2-0 mark on the weekend.  The Monarchs (6-2) were coming off a 59-45 win over previously unbeaten Texas Tech on Saturday.

ODU got off to a quick start and built a 27-16 lead with 2:22 to go in the second quarter. However, the Hatters went into the half on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to three.

Stetson rattled off another 8-0 run in the third quarter to take a 34-32 lead.  Wazeerud-Din and Streun each hit 3-pointers during that stretch to help put Stetson in front for the first time.

Following a couple of lead changes over the next 10 minutes, ODU went on a late 18-0 run to put the game out of reach.

"Our effort was great," Bria said.  "I thought we played tough. I thought we competed. I thought we rebounded hard against a team that was a lot bigger than us, so I was encouraged by that.  Overall we did a good job against a pretty good team."

Stetson held a 39-33 advantage on the glass and converted 12 second chance points on the offensive end. Mali Morgan-Elliott pulled down a season-high nine rebounds and Streun grabbed eight.

However, 23 Hatter turnovers led to 22 ODU points.

"I thought the turnovers really hurt us the whole game," Bria said.  "We have to get that corrected.  I thought the last few minutes really hurt us.  We turned the ball over and quit scoring. Then we started fouling. It was a combination of things, and that's why we get down so fast by 10, 12 points.  You can't do that at the end when teams ramp up their pressure. You have to be able to respond."

ODU became the first team this season to eclipse the 60-point mark against the Hatters and the first team to score 20 points in a quarter.  Stetson entered play Sunday ranked eighth in the NCAA in scoring defense (48.2 ppg).

Stetson will visit Furman next Saturday in Greenville, S.C.
